What is See and Learn?

See and Learn is a series of resources to support the development of foundational speech, language, reading and number skills for children with Down syndrome or similar developmental delays.

Currently, See and Learn includes three pathways: speech, language and reading, and numbers. Each pathway includes a number of steps, each including a series of teaching activities. Each step includes guidance and teaching materials, available as a printed kit or as an iPads app.

You can find out more about on the See and Learn web site.

If you have any questions about See and Learn, feel free to post them here or in the See and Learn Speech, See and Learn Language and Reading, or See and Learn Numbers categories.

Hi hello, I am a bit lost in what to buy for my 2yo. Her speech is not there yet. She has just started to sign consciously, and produce some sounds at repeat (she produce loads of different sounds but not when you want her too) We are going to have a year in a specialist setting and move to preschool in different one but I would like them to use her DAF funding to be consistent. We are getting an ipad and and the apps for her at home but I wonder what it would be the best option to ask for at nursery (taking in account only until july there) should we push for the app and ipad? or the physical kits? and in both cases, should we do a mix of SOUNDS, BLENDING SOUNDS, WORDS AND NUMBERS? I understand all the program would be too much but I want to choose the right kits for her. what is the difference in between the kits ‘sentences’ and ‘phrases’?
Also, which one of the online subscriptions is relevant? RLI? Early development? improving speech?

Hi – and thank you for your post –

We recommend working on speech and language teaching at the same time, starting with whatever is appropriate given your daughter’s current development.

See and Learn Speech focuses on speech sound discrimination (learning what different sounds sound like) and production (making different speech sounds) – starting with See and Learn Speech Sounds.

See and Learn Language and Reading teaches the meanings of words (spoken and, optionally, signed) and how to use them to communicate. At first, we teach new words with pictures, and then we introduce written words (with pictures and simple books) to illustrate how words can be put together.

The Phrases steps teach two ‘keyword’ combinations. See and Learn Sentences introduces simple sentence structures in a series of books, together with continuing vocabulary and sight word teaching.

If your daughter is not saying many words clearly, we recommend starting with speech sounds and then combining sounds.

Depending on her understanding of words, you might start with vocabulary 1, 2 or 3. If she understands 50 or more words then you can also start with work on phrases.

There is more detailed guidance for each step on the See and Learn web site.

The apps and printed materials offer the same teaching activities. Families report some children may be more engaged with one format or the other, but we do not have any evidence which might be more effective generally.

I hope this is helpful.
